For this project, I was tasked to create a typeface after researching, collecting letterform references, and sketching. I was able to create CHECKMATE.  The name was derived from the word that you say after winning a game of chess.  To add, the game of chess was also the theme of my typeface.  Some letterforms have chess piece forms while others don't, yet still go well together.  I wanted to create a typeface where each letterform had its shape, its own identity.  To achieve that, I use different chess pieces for different letters, as well as using the contrast of weight.
